Broadcroft Quarry Lane and Pools

I managed to get out for a walk this afternoon up Broadcroft Quarry Lane and well chuffed in finding a Pallas's Warbler feeding alongside 2 Chiffchaffs, 1 Goldcrest and a Firecrest. A very flighty bird moving up and down the lane, but I managed a few record shots of it.

Also along here a Great Spotted Woodpecker stopped off briefly, as did a Song Thrush and several Chaffinches.

Around the pools it was fairly quiet with just 1 Chiffchaff and a Goldcrest. Also here a Kestrel.

Here are a few images including some record shots of the Pallas's Warbler at this location Here.

The Pallas's Warbler from distance.

Pallas's Warblers breed in mountain forests from southern Siberia east to northern Mongolia and northeast China. In recent decades increasing numbers have been found in Europe in autumn and on Portland!!
Another record shot in the very dull conditions.

This is the location opposite..........

.........the Inert Tip Recycling Centre entrance.

One of the two Chiffchaffs along the lane, a third one was by the pool area.

A Wren just to add to the photo gallery.

There is a bird in here, a Great Spotted Woodpecker, which dropped in briefly.

HMS Queen Elizabeth just off Portland. The vessel to the left is Arklow Freedom a Cargo ship on its way to Dordrecht, Holland from Waterford, Ireland. More on the Arklow Here and More HMS Queen Elizabeth Here.

Song, Call and Photos

Here is the song of a Pallas's Warbler courtesy of Xeno-canto. Not a song we are likely to hear in the UK, if only though. Click Here for the song.

This is the call you will most likely hear in the UK at this time of year and is what I heard. Click Here.

If only I could have taken a photo like this, maybe tomorrow if it's still around. Click Here for some stunning photos..

Here is one photographed at Portland Bird Observatory on 1 Nov 14 by Steve Carey. Click Here.

Note. Thank you to Sean Foote who queried my sighting. I originally had it down as a Yellow-browed Warbler, but its definitely a Pallas's and only my second ever, the first being in Norfolk back in the late 80's.
